Radical Times
The Paris Commune had forced the Legislative Assembly to call a National Convention, Before the convention met, the Paris Commune dominated the potical scene. Led by newly appointed minister of justice, Georges Danton. The group Sans-Culottes wanted revenge on anyone who helped the king. Thousands were arrested and then killed. Leaders came out of the crowd, including Jean-Paul Marat who published the Friend of the People.
The Fate of the King
September 1792, The national Convention was dominated by lawyers, professionals and property owners. Almost all of them had some sort of political experience as a result of the revolution. Almost all distrusted the king. The national Conventions first step was on September 21, where they destroyed the Monarchy and establish a reuplic, the French Republic.
The memebr of the Convention couldnt agree with eachother and then split into factions. (dissenting groups) They were called the Mountain and the Girondins. they were both members of the Jacobin, a large network of political groups in France. The Girondins represtented the Provinces, the areas ouside the cities. They leaned toward keeing the king alive. The Mountain represented the intrests of radicals in the city of Paris.
The Mountain won early 1793 when it convinced the National Convention to pass a decree condemnig Louis XVI death. On Janurary 21, 1792 the king was beheaded on the guillotine. Then the Revolutionaries adopted this machine because it killed quicker, and more humanely.

Reign of Terror
In June 1793, the French Revolution enters its most violent and turbulent
phase when the Jacobins seized control of the National Convention from the more
moderate Girondins and instituted a series of radical measures, including the
establishment of a new calendar and the eradication of Christianity. They also
unleashed the bloody Reign of Terror, a 10-month period in which
suspected enemies of the revolution were guillotined by the thousands.
Many of the killings were carried out under orders from Robespierre, who dominated the
Committee of Public Safety until his own execution on July 28, 1794.
His death marked the beginning of the Thermidorian Reaction, a moderate phase in
which the French people revolted against the Reign of Terror’s excesses.
